In the turmoil between the wars, while Bernard, a 17-year-old Parisian student, was preparing to take his baccalaureate, he learned that he was born from an extra-marital affair.
This revelation turns the life of his home upside down. He takes the opportunity to flee and takes refuge with his friend Olivier. The latter is in love with his uncle, Edouard, a writer of around 40 years old.
Bernard sympathizes with him and becomes the writer's secretary.
Jealous, Olivier abandons himself in the arms of Robert de Passavant, a dishonest and slanderous homosexual writer.
