Opuntia , commonly called prickly pear or nopal, is a genus of cactus native to the arid regions of America, particularly Mexico. Belonging to the Cactaceae family, this plant is recognizable by its flat, segmented stems called cladodes or rackets. The rackets are often covered with small spines, but some varieties may be devoid of them.
Opuntia flowers are large and showy, with bright colors ranging from yellow to red to orange. They usually bloom at the top of the peduncles and are followed by the formation of fruits, called prickly pears. These fruits have a thick, spiny skin, enclosing a juicy, sweet pulp, red, orange or yellow in color, containing many small seeds.
